What is a monotype? Monotype (or monoprint) - often called the "painterly print" - is a one-of-a-kind print made by painting on an acrylic plate. The plate is then run thru an etching press with a damp sheet of paper, transferring the image to paper. Monotype has a spontaneity and freedom that other print processes, such as lithography or etching, do not. You can work in any style - from detailed, traditional styles to looser abstractions, incorporating photography, collage, text, to fine line-work.General Information:
The studio is located at Baltasar Izaguirre Rojo #23 in the heart of Centro Historico. Prints will be produced with oil based inks using a Griffin III, etching press, 37" x 52" press bed. All materials will be provided except paper. Paper can be purchased in the workshop at cost or if you prefer, you can bring your own printmaking paper such as Rives BFK. Optional items to bring: apron, brushes, sketchbook, ideas, source material.

printmaking at San Francisco State, Citadel Print Center in San Jose, which she
co-founded, and was a California Arts Council Artist in Residence, taking
printmaking to the schools for 3 years. As a board member of the San Jose ICA
she initiated and organized the Monotype Marathon now in its
15th year. She has done residencies at KALA Institute in Berkeley, Villa
Montalvo, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, and the Frans Masereel Print
Center in Belgium. She is a long-standing member of California Society of
Printmakers.
Glen is an internationally exhibited artist whose work has been shown in the
U.S., England, Australia, France, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and
Singapore. As a full-time artist, she splits her time between painting,
printmaking, drawing and public sculpture. Permanent collections include San
Jose Museum of Art, the Triton Museum, AMD, Adobe, Frans Masareel Print Center,
KALA Institute, and many private collections. Her work is featured in The Best
of Printmaking, an International Collection.
Glen brought out the best from a group of artists with widely
varied backgrounds. Her range of knowledge and experience is
stimulating without being daunting to even beginners. And with old
town Mazatlan for a backdrop to her beautiful studio, inspiration
was everywhere. I'd go back in a heartbeat!
I've taken many printmaking workshops, some good, some okay,
some lousy. My personal gauge for evaluating printmaking workshops is a
combination of efficiency and effectiveness. I want to MAKE art, not
talk about how to make it. Glen's workshop, 'Monotype in Mazatlan', was
FANTASTIC!
Hands down the best! Glen worked with each participant to help bring out the best of our own intentions. Her experience as a master printer and
teacher was always evident: she knows how to encourage, facilitate, and
assist each person. Her house and studio is comfortable, capacious, and
welcoming, showing her native Southern hospitality. Everyday we ordered
lunch in so we didn't waste time waiting for food. Her demos were
informative, clear, and stimulating. I loved learning her dry point
method and used it in 7 of my 9 full size monotypes and monoprints.
There were many, many other things I loved about my stay in Mazatlan
(walking the Centro Historico, swimming, yoga, and everything Mexican!)
I can't wait to go back!
